Underfloor Cooling

As temperatures climb in summer, underfloor cooling offers a calm, quiet way to stay comfortable, with no fans, vents or cold draughts. It uses the same pipework that warms your building in winter, circulating gently chilled water beneath the floor to draw heat out of the room and leave it calm, even and cool.

How it works
Chilled water, produced by a chiller, an air source heat pump or a ground source heat pump, flows through pipes in the floor. The floor surface is kept at around 18 to 20 °C, cool enough to absorb heat from people, furniture and sunlight, yet safely above the dew point so condensation does not form. Smart controls and sensors monitor the conditions and adjust the system automatically, so you do not have to think about it.

Why choose underfloor cooling
• Quiet and draught-free. There are no fans, vents or blasts of cold air.
• Even comfort. The whole floor works as a cooling surface, so there are no hot or cold spots.
• Energy efficient. The water only needs to be a few degrees below room temperature, so a heat pump uses far less energy than conventional air conditioning.
• Discreet. No wall units, ducts or ceiling cassettes, so your interior stays clean and uncluttered.
• One system, all year. The same installation heats in winter and cools in summer.
• Better for air quality. Less dust is circulated, and the air is not dried out.

Is it right for your building?
Underfloor cooling typically works alongside your main cooling rather than replacing it. It takes the edge off warm days and keeps rooms comfortable, but it is not usually designed to deliver the powerful cooling of air conditioning. It performs best in new or extensively refurbished buildings that are well insulated and shaded, and that have a chiller, an air source heat pump or a ground source heat pump to supply the chilled water. Open-plan living areas, kitchens and commercial spaces with tiled or stone floors are ideal candidates.
